Dark Times and Lighter Moments

This is poetry for and of our modern times.

The first section - Dark Times - of this opening volume of poetry includes a variety of themes. Neuroleptic Nightmare reflects on the futility of the western world's drug bias in its approach to depression. Tragedy In The Lottery Of Life highlights the vulnerability of us all to swingeing changes in circumstances. This section also covers three poems around the time of the death of his mother and other poems which touch briefly on the same subjects without being morbid. In particular the villanelle Go Meekly is a striking tribute to Dylan Thomas' poem to his father "Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night" as well as to the subject of the poem. The poem Hiroshima Peace Park reflects the deep impression a visit to the site of the atomic explosion will have on everyone.

The second section - Lighter Moments - is a complete contrast. It contains poems which reflect on his several visits to China, including Beijing one of which prompted the poem Expectancy, humorous poems on A Visit to my Dentist, What's Good For You? a sonnet with an ironic look at our inconsistencies.

The book shows his invention and deserves to grace the bookshelves of all with an interest in poetry and the highs and lows of life and death.
